NEAT Rack Intern, Summer 2026

Richweb · NEAT Rack Program
Ashland, Virginia · In-Office · Internship

Company: Richweb · Program: NEAT Rack Apprenticeship

Type: Paid Internship · Duration: Summer 2026 (~10–12 weeks)

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate

Location: Ashland, Virginia · In-Office

About the Program

NEAT Rack is Richweb's structured network engineering apprenticeship. Interns work through a hands-on lab curriculum using the same production-grade hardware and software that Richweb engineers use on real customer networks every day. By the end of the summer, participants have built, configured, and troubleshot network infrastructure that most engineers only encounter in job descriptions.

This isn't a shadowing program - you'll be at a workbench with a console cable, configuring Juniper switches from scratch, building routing topologies, and verifying it all with packet captures. Senior engineers are present and engaged throughout.

What You'll Work On

  • Linux and virtualization - Debian from a bare install, KVM hypervisor setup, and VM management
  • Network switching - Juniper JunOS over serial console, VLANs, trunking, Layer 3 switching, and PoE
  • Routing protocols - static routing, then OSPF, using the BIRD daemon on Linux alongside Juniper and Cisco gear
  • Firewalls and tunnels - OpenBSD with pf for packet filtering and NAT, GRE tunnels with IPsec, verification with tcpdump
  • BGP and IPv6 - multi-router BGP topologies with iBGP and eBGP peering, plus dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 labs
  • VoIP - 3CX PBX deployment, extension setup, and provisioning hard phones across the lab network

Who Should Apply

  • Students in computer science, computer networking, information technology, or electrical engineering - or motivated self-taught individuals
  • People who run homelabs, follow networking blogs, and already know they want to work in infrastructure
  • Comfortable on a command line and genuinely curious about how networks actually work
  • No prior professional experience required - curiosity and work ethic matter more than credentials

Nice to Have

  • Some Linux experience (even just basic navigation and file editing)
  • A homelab, personal networking project, or coursework in networking or systems
  • Familiarity with Cisco IOS, JunOS, or any routing protocol concepts
  • Working toward a CCNA, CompTIA Network+, or similar certification
