Richweb Secure FTP Manager

Many businesses need to move large files back and forth between customers, vendors, partners, etc.  Email attachments may work for files up to 10 to 15 Megabytes in size, but larger files will generally cause problems for the ever prevalent spam and virus filters in place on most mail systems. Most large files are simply dropped, causing end user frustration and delays.

Richweb has a secure product that is as secure AND easy to use. Our secure ftp manager works well whether the file transfer needs are temporary, such as for the duration of a project or for a more permanent relationship like a partner, customer, or vendor. Secure site Login screen option - Richweb can create a centrally managed file storage area. This is best used for situations where one or two users handle all of the file uploads and a caption or instructions for use should be placed with each file uploaded:

Multi-Account Download Only Feature

This feature allows a single ftp account to upload files but have multiple web based download users. This is useful when multiple vendors all need access to download the same files but each vendor should have read-only (download only) access, and each vendor should have a private password so that individual download accounts can be removed or added or disabled easily.

To use this feature follow these steps:

1. Create an ftp account using the web gui.

2. Login via ftp and create a files/ folder within the root of the ftp user.

3. Upload a username/password file in the root of the ftp folder named passwd.txt with the following format:

Separate each username and password with a colon
do not use spaces in either usernames or passwords
valid characters for usernames and passwords are
letters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, underscore, and dash.
Comment lines in this file should start with ##

4. We suggest using a pure text editor like Metapad to edit this file. Microsoft Word and Wordpad often use non-ascii character sets which will cause problems.

5. To disable a user, comment out the username:password line.

6. This file is processed every 10 minutes and synced to the webserver configuration. Contact Richweb to have the new ftp directory added to the configuration file for multi-user processing.

7. Any user listed in the passwd file should now have read-only web based download access to the files using this url:

https://secure.mycompany.com/~[baseftpuser]/files/

Where [baseftpuser] is the name of the ftp account created in step 1.

Make sure that the content (files and directories) that the web download only users should have access to are posted in the /files/ folder.

You can create as many of these multi user download base ftp accounts as needed. You might, for example, create one for each marketing team, or one for each engineering team or project.

From Our Clients...

"The folks at richweb.com - and particularly Jon Larsen - have provided the best service I have received in 10 years of website ownership and development. Jon helped me move my large site from our old server host to one with other SportsWar.com network sites (also managed by Richweb). He was available whenever I needed information or help and provided much needed assistance and technical support in the server transfer. I cannot imagine making the move without richweb there to support me and my site. In short, Richweb gives the best technical support I have ever experienced."
